FAQs

What dog shampoo do vets recommend?

Veterinarians may recommend different dog shampoos based on the individual needs of the dog. Some of the commonly recommended shampoos include oatmeal-based shampoos, which help soothe and moisturise dry, itchy skin; medicated shampoos, which are used to treat a variety of skin conditions such as allergies, infections, and parasites; hypoallergenic shampoos, which are formulated to be gentle on dogs with allergies or sensitive skin; and flea and tick shampoos, which are designed to kill and repel fleas and ticks. To determine which dog shampoo is best for your pet, it's always recommended to consult with your veterinarian, who can assess your dog's specific needs and skin type.

What do groomers use to wash dogs?

Combination of high quality pH balanced shampoos, depending on dogs coat and skin. Professional groomers typically use high-quality dog shampoos that are specially formulated to clean and condition a dog's coat and skin. These shampoos may contain natural oils, vitamins, and minerals that help nourish and hydrate a dog's skin and coat.

What can I use to wash my dog if I don't have dog shampoo?

Warm water and a sponge.  It's important to note that human shampoos and soaps are formulated for human skin, which has a different pH level than a dog's skin. Using these products too frequently can dry out your dog's skin and cause irritation, so it's best to use a specially formulated dog shampoo whenever possible.

If you find yourself without dog shampoo and need to give your dog a bath, be sure to dilute the shampoo or soap with plenty of warm water, and rinse your dog thoroughly to avoid leaving any residue on their coat. After the bath, be sure to dry your dog thoroughly to prevent them from getting chilled.

Can I use fairy liquid soap on my dog?

No, fairy liquid strips the dogs or puppy coat of its natural oils.  It's not recommended to use Fairy liquid soap, or any other dish soap, on your dog on a regular basis as they can be too harsh for their skin. These soaps are formulated to remove grease and grime from dishes and can be too strong for your dog's delicate skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and even skin damage.

What soap is safe for dogs?

If you're looking for a safe and effective soap for your dog, it's recommended to use only bars of dog soap that are specifically designed for dogs. These soaps are formulated to be gentle on your dog's skin and coat, with the correct pH balance. Using human soap or shampoo can be too harsh for your dog's skin, causing dryness, irritation, or even allergic reactions.

Choosing a dog soap that's pH balanced can help maintain your dog's skin's natural oils and prevent dryness or irritation. These soaps can be found in a range of formulations that target different skin types and coat conditions, such as dry or sensitive skin.

Is baking soda safe for dogs?

Baking soda is generally safe for dogs when used in moderation and under the guidance of a veterinarian. It has several benefits for dogs, such as helping to neutralize odors, soothe itchy skin, and clean teeth.

However, it's important to note that baking soda should not be ingested in large amounts, as it can cause digestive upset, including vomiting and diarrhea. Additionally, baking soda should not be used on broken or irritated skin, as it can cause further irritation.

When using baking soda on your dog, always dilute it with water and use it sparingly. For example, you can sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on your dog's bedding to neutralize odors, or mix a small amount with water to create a paste for cleaning your dog's teeth.

If you have any concerns about using baking soda on your dog, it's always best to consult with your vet, who can provide guidance on the appropriate use and dosage.

Can I use human shampoo on my dog?

No, it is not appropriate as humans shampoo has a pH balance of 5.5-5.6 - so fairly acidic - meaning it can remove the natural protection. A dogs pH balance is 5.5 -7.5. Using human shampoo on your dog can disrupt the natural balance of their skin and coat, leading to dryness, irritation, or even skin damage.

Additionally, human shampoos often contain ingredients that can be harmful to dogs, such as fragrances and sulfates. These ingredients can cause allergic reactions, dry out your dog's skin, and damage their coat.

Can I use conditioner on my dog?

Only conditioner which is especially formulated for dogs, will help to brush through the coat. Dog Conditioner is a great way to moisturize and soften your dog's coat, leaving it shiny and smooth. It can also help detangle your dog's fur and make brushing and grooming easier.

However, it's important to choose a conditioner that's designed for dogs and pH-balanced for their skin. Human conditioners can be too acidic or alkaline for a dog's skin, causing dryness or irritation.

When using conditioner on your dog, be sure to follow the instructions carefully and rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving any residue on their coat. Use a small amount of conditioner, and concentrate on areas that tend to get dry or tangled, such as the ears, tail, and paws.

Can I use baby wash on my dog?

No. It's generally not recommended to use mild baby wash on dogs. Although it may be gentle on a baby's skin, a dog's skin is different and requires a different pH balance. Using baby wash on your dog can disrupt the natural balance of their skin and coat, leading to dryness, irritation, or even skin damage. Baby wash also often contains fragrances and other additives that can be irritating to a dog's skin.

Can I shower my dog everyday?

Not advisable.  It can fairly quickly dry the dogs natural oils, with a good balanced dog shampoo - once a week.   It's generally not recommended to shower your dog every day, as it can strip their skin and coat of natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. In fact, most dogs only need to be bathed every 4 to 6 weeks, or as needed.

However, there are some situations where more frequent bathing may be necessary, such as if your dog has rolled in something smelly or has a skin condition that requires more frequent bathing. In these cases, it's important to use a gentle, pH-balanced dog shampoo and to rinse your dog thoroughly to avoid leaving any residue on their coat.
